MSOE challenges students to maximize their potential, but that challenge requires healthy and nutritious dining options and collaborative spaces. The new Robert Spitzer Dining Commons, named for Dr. Robert Spitzer, the third president of MSOE, is an intentionally designed space to increase and enhance the capacity of food service to support additional students, faculty and staff, and build community with new dining options and places to meet, study and socialize. Located on the third floor of the MSOE Campus Center, this complete renovation will transform the space into the primary dining area for resident and commuter students, faculty, staff and campus visitors. When complete in Fall 2020, it will be an active campus hub, designed to encourage collaboration among the entire campus community.
The new servery will feature a variety of healthy eating options and provide food from locally sourced ingredients making it a desired destination. Options will also be expanded to include a retail counter and an app pick-up window for online ordering. Additional amenities include a games room, multimedia TV lounge and social houses. Flexible seating arrangements and comfortable booths paired with integrated power-charging stations will create a functional, yet relaxed environment. Taking cues from the building’s industrial roots, the design incorporates large steel beams and original saw-tooth skylights to enhance the expansive two-story volume. The MSOE campus brand will be incorporated throughout using the school’s vibrant red color, dynamic black & white textural elements and custom environmental graphics to reinforce a sense-of-place for students and faculty alike.
