Hermann Viets Tower, centrally located on MSOE’s campus, recently underwent a complete renovation and expansion to become a Living-Learning Community (LLC) with modernized, flexible living and learning spaces designed to serve the diverse needs of students and function as an extension of the classroom. The vision for this new LLC is to encourage academic success and give students with similar academic, social and personal interests the opportunity to live together, collaborate and share experiences.

The 13-Story tower, built in 1965, previously housed 450 students. 48 rooms were added in the renovation, increasing the capacity by 20%. Two-story, glass-enclosed, collaboration hubs were added to the southern façade, providing beautiful views overlooking the city skyline, creating dynamic “affinity houses” and allowing the University to group floors by degree or interest, promoting student collaboration. The ground floor is accessible to all MSOE students and features dedicated workspaces, classrooms, private study areas, and collaboration hubs to facilitate group work and support interdisciplinary projects.

The building was named the Hermann Viets Residence Tower in honor of the late Dr. Hermann Viets, MSOE’s fourth president.
